12 14, 2022
On December 5, during the World Science Forum held in Cape Town in South Africa, the International Science Council (ISC) appointed 60 new ISC Fellows, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to promoting science as a global public good. Prof. Guo Huadong, Director General of CBAS, was among those appointed as an ISC Fellow.

Prof. Guo is an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of TWAS, and a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a Foreign Member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters. He is a prominent scientist known for his work in remote sensing science, and interdisciplinary, international cooperation. He is a recipient of the ISC Science for Sustainability Award and is serving on the ISC Global Commission on Science Missions for Sustainability and President of ISC-China. He was appointed as a member of the UN 10-Member Group to support TFM for SDGs appointed by the UN Secretary-General and has actively contributed to and participated in international efforts towards sustainability. He was one of the founders of ISDE, President of ISDE (2015-1019), and currently Honorary President of ISDE (2019-). He is a leading voice developing Big Earth Data science and applying it to facilitate SDGs from global to local scales through data-driven methods.

The Fellowship is the highest honor that can be conferred on an individual by the ISC. Joining the 66 Fellows that were appointed in June, it is anticipated that they will support ISC in its vital mission to bring science and its benefits to society and help address urgent societal problems such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, water, energy and food security, as well as urgent transformations required in research itself.

The second cohort of Fellows includes eminent social and natural scientists, engineers and thought-leaders who have made impactful contributions in the sphere of scientific policy.  Each hails from different countries and regions, disciplines, sectors and career stages.

The ISC was launched in 2018 following a merger of the International Council for Science (ICSU), which was created in 1931, and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), created in 1952. It is the largest international, non-governmental science organization of its kind in the world.
