The Royal Society has called for input from the global scientific community for the "Climate change: science and solutions" briefings in preparation for the United Nations Climate Summit COP26 in Glasgow in 2021. They will highlight the potential of research, development, and deployment for climate action in 12 critical areas. These briefings are based on the expertise of over 120 scientists from more than 20 countries, covering topics that will be key to 'net zero' greenhouse gas emissions. The effort recognizes that decarbonization and adaptation to climate change will require science-based solutions.
Prof. Guo Huadong, Director General of CBAS, is a contributor to the briefings, focusing on digital technology's role in a low carbon world, including reducing the emissions from computing itself. Governments, academia, industry and the third sector should cooperate to create a 'planetary digital twin' to simulate, optimize and transform economic activity to reduce emissions while increasing efficiency.
