Survey sheds light on harnessing digital public goods for Sustainable Development Goals

12 11, 2023

In a recent survey conducted by the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), 51 scientists from around the world shared their insights on the role of Digital Public Goods (DPGs) in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The survey aimed to shed light on defining DPGs and addressing challenges associated with their practical implementation in supporting the SDGs.
The study was published in Scientific Data (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-023-02803-x) on December 7.
The survey highlights that DPGs are crucial for information-driven decision-making for sustainable development if supported by effective data policies. The survey results unveiled a consensus among experts regarding core principles essential for successfully integrating DPGs into the SDG framework.
The proposed strategy emphasizes the establishment of international standards, adhering to open science and open data principles, and ensuring scalability in monitoring SDG indicators.  Experts believe that these principles are pivotal in extracting maximum benefit from the growing number of digital resources while aligning with the broader objectives of the SDGs.
One key highlight of the survey is the global call for a community-driven strategy to develop DPGs. By fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including scientists, policymakers, and technologists, the strategy aims to accelerate the production of DPGs to effectively achieve the SDGs.
The experts underscore the importance of international standards to ensure the interoperability and compatibility of DPGs across diverse systems. Open science and open data principles were identified as cornerstones, emphasizing transparency, accessibility, and collaboration in the development and utilization of digital resources.
Scalability in monitoring SDG indicators emerged as a critical aspect, as it ensures the adaptability and effectiveness of DPGs across different regions and contexts. The experts stress the need for dynamic solutions that can evolve with the changing landscape of sustainable development.
The survey is expected to serve as a foundation for a comprehensive strategy that aligns with the evolving nature of digital technologies and their potential impact on global goals. By incorporating the insights of experts from various scientific fields, the proposed strategy seeks to guide the development and implementation of DPGs to maximize their positive impact on the SDGs.
